Galena, Illinois

My trip to Galena was short but nice. I went there for a day and had a nice time.  It’s a 2 hour drive from downtown Chicago and it’s considered a favorite weekend destination of Chicagoans. It’s a charming little river town and the atmosphere is more laid back. I love that the buildings looked like they were frozen in time.  The town definitely has a distinct character and I love the shops. We didn’t get to go outside of downtown Galena but on our drive down there, we passed by a few wineries which offer wine tastings and tours.  Eagle Ridge golf resort, an award-winning golf resort and spa is also in the area.  If you love shopping for unique stuff then you would like it there.  Dowtown Main Street is lined with shops and restaurants.  You can easily spend a day there browsing the stores or simply sit on a bench on a sidewalk and enjoy a cup of coffee or a bowl of ice cream.  Every store was different.  There’s a specialty gift store next to a unique toy store next to a one of a kind candy store next to a specialty pasta store, and well, you catch my drift.   There’s a candle store called Galena Candle Company that I loved. The store smelled so good and they sell eco dotz candle beads that you can customize by choosing your own flavors or scents and make your own design in a jar  like you do with colored sand. It’s fun if you’re into that kind of stuff.  I also noticed a lot of bikers there.  I’m not sure why but it seems to be a favorite stop for biker dudes. It’s pretty cool. There are a lot of restaurants to choose from too although the one we went to wasn’t very satisfying foodwise. We did a little wine tasting at Galena Cellars Winery and tried their chocolate wine.  It was good. Overall for me, Galena was a good day trip.
